Speech & Debate Team

The St. Luke School Speech Team has a long history of developing public speaking skills in a fun, supportive way. The weekly team meetings after school are designed to help students develop and improve speech techniques. The Team also attends select local tournaments early in the school year as observers to better understand how these events work and to see performances.

Speech Team is open to all 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Speech team meets once a week (days to be determined), and each meeting lasts 75-90 minutes. Attending weekly Speech Team meetings after school is expected (notwithstanding excused absences), and practice outside of team meetings is important for improvement.

Speech Team members who show progress are invited to attend local Speech Tournaments several times a year and represent St. Luke School.

Speech Team Empowers students with a wide range of social, academic and life skills:

  • Speech Team helps build confidence and poise
  • Students make artistic choices about how they bring words to life.
  • Students learn to think on their feet and tailor a performance to a given audience.
  • Students build upon feedback to improve their performances

Members of our Speech Team are welcome to also participate in Debate Team events.

Speech Team season runs from September through February, with the potential for additional Championship events at the State and National level in the Spring.

Debate Team started in 2023 and is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Newcomers to Debate meet twice weekly to learn key concepts and protocols for debate (days to be determined). Attendance at team meetings after school is expected (notwithstanding excused absences), as each class builds on previous information. Each meeting lasts approximately 75-90 minutes. Research and practice outside of meetings is necessary to be successful.

Our Debaters attend select tournaments as soon as they are appropriately prepared for competitive debate.

  • Students build confidence and poise
  • Students learn to effectively communicate their ideas
  • Students learn to research information for debate
  • Students learn to understand both sides of an issue
  • Students work with teammates to create arguments and build on feedback
  • Students learn to think on their feet

Members of our Debate Team are welcome to also participate in Speech Team events.

Debate Team season runs from September through March, with the potential for additional Championship events at the State and National level in the Spring.
